Snacking in Animal Kingdom – Deliciously Unique

Magical Blograil Orange

Welcome to those of you joining me from  Disney with Babies, Toddlers, & Preschoolers and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the 4th stop on our Magical Blogorail.

Jambo!

I am visiting Animal Kingdom searching for some delicious unique snacks.  At home I am the queen of snacking; I am so busy during the day that grabbing some quick snacks is the best way to keep my engine going.  When I’m in the parks my major go to snack is the Premium Mickey Ice Cream Bar, but I decided to go on the hunt for something a little more unique and just as delicious!

MagicalBlog13

My first stop is in Discovery Island at Gardens Kiosk for a great snack to get my day started, Hummus with Vegetables.  Upon ordering my energy packed snack I discovered this kiosk is so much more than just a snack cart.  They offer a range of pre-packaged gluten-free snacks and to one up that, this kiosk can help you plan your next meal.  They offer information on allergy and other dietary needs within Animal Kingdom restaurants. I don’t have any food allergies but I can see what a great resource this food kiosk could be for someone that does.

Magicalblog1

Now it’s time to have some fun exploring Discovery Island before I stop for my next snack >>>>>>>

I am on the look out for another snack location so I’m off to visit Africa.   Before I wander onto Pangani Forest Exploration Trail I am in need of something a little sweet…. Ok a lot sweet!  Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery looks like a perfect spot to find a sweet treat, in fact upon further inspection it looks to be a spot to find many sweet treats!  I am choosing the White Chocolate Elephant Cupcake; it is made of chocolate cake and topped with a sweet vanilla cream frosting. The frosting is topped with toasted coconut, adding another layer of flavor. In the center is a peanut-butter textured frosting and finally it’s topped with an edible white chocolate elephant that is almost too cute to eat!  If this doesn’t cure my sweet tooth I don’t know what will.  I am told this is also a great place to have a quick breakfast – maybe on your way to get on line for Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Great cupcake- great Exploration Trail and I’m on the hunt once again for another snack.  This time I think I would really prefer something on the cool side, so I’m going to stop here at Royal Anandapur Tea Company in Asia for a Frozen Chai.  This is a wonderful mix of sweet and spicy, it has small ice crystals mixed in with the tea and it sure hits the spot on this rather warm day at Animal Kingdom!

Well I think that wraps up our day of snacking at Animal Kingdom. I might just take a spin on Kali River Rapids before heading out.  Depending on how soaked I may get I might need to stop for a hot tea!

Hakuna Matata and keep on snacking!

Easter at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa

The Grand Floridian has an amazing array of hand crafted chocolate eggs on display right in their main lobby.  This is their  3rd Annual Easter Egg Display, but Executive Pastry Chef Erich Herbitschek and his team have been making these unique chocolate creations for 18 years and displaying them in the Grand Floridian’s restaurants.

These eggs can stand 16 to 20 inches tall and weigh between 9 to12 pounds. They are decorated with all edible ingredients.  “There are 18 eggs in all this year, and each takes 18 to 20 hours to create, says Chef Erich.”

Look for your favorite princess creation, The Little Mermaid, Elsa, Pocahontas, Aurora and Cinderella.  You can see this display until April 22nd.

Which is your favorite?

Our Many Adventures of Tom Sawyer Island

My first visit to Tom Sawyer Island was in 2011, prior to that I was not intrigued to explore this uncharted territory.  During my Disney vacation planning that year I decided we should try something new and venture onto the island.  Rebekah was 5 ½ years old and had been to WDW three times prior and I thought this would be a great new exploration for her as well.

One late Magic Kingdom morning after conquering Frontierland’s two mountains, we stopped for a little snack on the way to find Tom Saywer Island.  We found the entrance and ventured down a ramp and onto a dock to wait for Tom to send a raft over that would bring us to his island, (can you guess what snack Rebekah chose?)

DSCF0025

As we boarded, I noticed he named this particular raft Becky Thatcher after the girl who captured his heart.  As “Becky” floated us over to the island we turned to wave goodbye to Frontierland, ready to scout out new adventures.

tsi16

When we arrived, the raft docked and we scurried off quickly. We first discovered a map of the island with a brief history of Mark Twain’s childhood adventures.  We then began to meander, not really knowing which way to go first.  Before long we found one discovery after another!

tsi11

tsi15

What had taken me so long to visit Tom, Huck and the others who inhabited this island?  Rebekah was not the only one enjoying every nook and cranny…. …. I too was having a great time exploring and viewing the park from across the Rivers of America.  It was a whole different perspective- it’s pretty neat to be able to look at the park from angles that you ordinarily don’t see.

tsi18

DSCF0029

tsi23

Our exploration led us to dark tunnels where we heard bats flapping their wings above us and water that seemed to run up hill!  My husband would walk ahead of us and jump out from behind the cave crevices – startling both me and Rebekah.

tsi25

DSCF0035DSCF0034

Look at the beautiful gems we found in the mine!  I wonder if the Seven Dwarfs know about this?

tsi29

Then we ventured into another cave and seen something really spooky!

tsi26tsi28

During our travels we came upon a suspension barrel bridge that was great fun!  This brought us to Fort Langhorn where we protected the fort from “bad guys” on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad!

tsi17

tsi2

If the “bad guys” or Injun Joe make it past the guard on duty, there is a secret tunnel to escape through!

tsi8

tsi7

Don’t forget to take care of the horses and make sure they are fed before heading on out.

tsi9

We found Aunt Polly’s Landing, (Tom’s aunt) a lovely place to rest your weary feet ~

tsi21

Up a hill we found a fun play area and pretended to sail down the Rivers of America ~

tsi12

DSCF0031

We climbed to the top of the stairs in Potter’s Mill, what a great view.

tsi20DSCF0032

DSCF0033

Inside Harper’s Mill we found a little feathered friend who decided to make it’s home inside the mills turning gears.

tsi24

tsi31

Once we were sure we explored the whole island, we sought our way back to the dock’s to catch a raft back to mainland.

tsi19

This is a great place to bring the mouseketeers when they need some time to just run free.  There is something exciting waiting be explored around each bend; sprinkle in a little Disney Magic and a touch of imagination and your adventures with Tom and Huck will create lasting memories.  I myself, can’t wait to go back 🙂

Have you been to Tom Sawyer’s Island?  What was your favorite adventure?

Hoopin and Hollerin at Fort Wilderness! Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue

Like everything else Disney does so well, their dinner shows are no exception.  I have had the pleasure of being a quest at Pioneer Hall, (located in Fort Wilderness) to experience the one and only, Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue.  It promises to be a rootin –tootin, knee slappin good time and it definitely delivers!

To reach Pioneer Hall you much get to Fort Wilderness Campground parking lot by car or bus.  Once there, another Disney bus will transport you through the campground area right to your dining destination.

hoop2

As you disembark from the bus just look for the two story rustic log cabin, this is Pioneer Hall.  Once inside you will have no problem being transported back to times of cowboys and stage coaches.  The large wagon wheel chandeliers, floor to ceiling log columns, hanging bear skin rug, red checked table cloths, and at the center of it all, a vaudeville stage ready to welcome the Pioneer Hall Players.

hoop1

Upon making reservations you will have a choice of seating, category, 1, 2 or 3.  My preference is a balcony seat along the sides of the stage which is category three and is the least expensive.  From this viewpoint you can watch the entire show with out turning away from the table while dining on the hearty vittles that are served.

hoop3

Before the stage coach arrives with the zany cast, you are seated at your table which is previously set with a small warm loaf of cornbread accompanied with a portion of creamy butter and a kettle of crunchy garden-fresh mixed green salad.  This salad is loaded with cucumber slices, diced carrots, red onion and cherry tomatoes with delicious Italian vinaigrette throughout.  Don’t forget to order your sangria or other choice of beverage.

hoop4

hoop6

DSCF0597

Before long you hear the stage coach arrive and like a whirlwind the noisy gang rushes through the doors, right through the center of the crowd and up to the stage and just like that the show begins!  Meet Six Bits, Dolly, Jim, Flora, Johnny and Claire. The crowd is treated to old American classics such as, My Darling Clementine and She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain along with some good ole’ slap stick comedy that is sure to evoke a chuckle or two.  Then the bounty of comfort foods abounds from the kitchen- fried chicken, bbq spare ribs, corn on the cob, baked beans, and mashed potatoes. Don’t expect service with a smile; remember you are in a back woods dining hall where table manners are not in abundance.  It is not uncommon for your kettle of ribs or friend chicken to be tossed upon the table in an almost careless manner, (but its all part of the show so let yourself chuckle as you sip on your sangria).

hoop10

hoop7

DSCF0599

DSCF0602

As you finish your dinner, the show picks up it’s pace and chosen audience members are beckoned down to the stage to act out a skit with the Pioneer Hall Players.  My husband was chosen to play the role of the Brave Indian which made for great laughs for our family and lots of Disney Magic Memories.  He was even presented with a Pioneer Hall Players Certificate for Bravery at the end of the show and a complimentary photograph of himself in Brave Action!

As the show winds down, or shall I say up – dessert is presented in true vaudeville form as your server’s debut their Strawberry Shortcake number on stage!  Once that dessert finally made it to my table, it was gone in no time, it was THAT GOOD!

DSCF0606

 strawberry short cake

While dessert is being served and consumed the whole audience has a chance to get in on this act; wash boards are distributed to the tables so you can play your best tune to their closing song.  If playing the wash board is not your thing, then grab your napkin and twirl it above your head!  Yee Haw!

DSCF0614DSCF0605

Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue is great fun and a fantastically delicious meal!  I have enjoyed each of the four times I have been and I will go again!

hoop13

A little fun fact- Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue is one of the longest, continuously running musicals in American theater history!

Rafiki’s Planet Watch – Don’t Pass It By!

Jambo!

Today we are taking a train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch and Conservation Station! Animal Kingdom has become a very special place to me; my love and appreciation for it has grown over the years.  My first visit was less than stellar because I didn’t do the proper research before going.  I knew Magic Kingdom and Epcot like the back of my hand, but Animal Kingdom was a whole other animal (excuse the pun).

Animal Kingdom envelops as much Disney magic as the Magic Kingdom does, but you have to look for it in a different way.  The magic lies within its animals and environment.  Each has so much to tell us and to teach us.  You have to switch gears when entering Animal Kingdom’s gates; the thrills you will experience here are of a different kind.  They are more quiet adventures, unless you dare to visit the Yeti at Expedition Everest!

Ok!  Lets head on over to Rafiki’s Planet Watch and see all it has to offer!

To get to our destination, we must board the Wildlife Express at the Harambe Train Station found on the outskirts of Africa.

conserve7

This train is a little different; the seats face what you would otherwise call the side of the train.  As we take this 7 minute journey, we will see the overnight animal housing for Kilimanjaro Safaris.

conserve11

c5

conserve12

As our train pulls into our destination and we disembark, we must stay alert and pay attention not miss the lessons along the trail of Habitat Habit.  This trail is properly named as we should all make it a HABIT to preserve and conserve our HABITAT for the good of the animals and ourselves.  Along the way we will also be introduced to the Cotton Top Tamarans, who are an endangered species.  Before you reach the end of Habitat Habit the kids have a fun challenge of their own, to help spot different species in a backyard setting- teaching them how to make their own backyard a great home for these creatures.

 On to Conservation Station!

DSCF0511

Conservation Station is an inside view of how Disney takes care of its animals.  There is a lot to see in this building so let’s not rush through; it isn’t everyday that we get to see the awesome sights and inside workings of some of these stations.

Walking into Conservation Station we are greeted by larger than life animal murals along the walls, it takes my breath away each time I see it.

c1c2

Rounding the corner we enter into a large room featuring many educational areas.  In the center is Animal Encounters.  Here a cast member will accompany an animal that we may or may not be able to touch, depending on the species or its temperament.  The Cast Member is there to inform us about the animal and answer any questions we may have.  In the past when I have visited, I seen a komodo dragon, a very long snake, and a great big opossum.

conserve2

DSCF0513

Tucked in a corner of the large room is Song of the Rainforest.  Let’s open the door and head in, we can take our whole group with us.  There are headphones and a comfortable bench to rest on.  Here we can listen to the sounds of the rainforest and if we close our eyes we just might forget where we are and really feel as if we are in a rainforest.

conserve6

In front of this area we will have a chance to meet with one of the following characters, Pocahontas, Jiminy Cricket, or Rafiki and his pals.  Don’t forget your autograph book!

DSCF0518DSCF0514

On the far side of the room we can check out animal feces at the Wildlife Tracking Center.  Here they test the animal’s feces, which can provide them with great information such as their health or even if they are going to have babies!  The coolest thing of all, we get to hold elephant poop!  Don’t worry it has been sealed with a special coating so we won’t get dirty, stinky hands.

conserve19

If we visit the Conservation Station in the morning hours, we just may see an animal being treated in the Veterinarian Treatment Room.  This is a Cotton Topped Tamaran, he is just having his routine check up.

conserv5

conserve9

Moving down the line we come to the Animal Nutrition Room.  Here is where the food is prepared and we have an inside view of what different animals are fed.

conserve14

On the end we will see reptiles and amphibians; not my most favorite part of Conservation Station.  Snakes are not my favorite thing to look at, so I usually move rather quickly past this area.

conserve15

Want to pet some animals?  Let’s go out that back door to Affection Section. Here we will see a variety of animals; this may change depending on the time of your visit.  Animals that need special help or attention are sent to Animal Kingdom and we can meet some of them at Conservation Station and Affection Section.  The goats here are always looking to have their hair brushed, there are baskets of brushes to help them stay tangle free.

c4

conserve3

c3

Want to help Animal Kingdom keep up the amazing job of education, conservation, and research?  You can!  You can donate a $1.00 or more and receive one of these great pins.  Just ask a cast member about them if you do not see them displayed.

conserve20

Well, it’s time to take the train back to Harambe Train Station – a little fun fact?  It only takes 5 minutes on the way back opposed to the 7 minutes on the way there.

I hope you enjoyed our time together at Rafikis Planet Watch and I sure hope you come back and visit again because you never know what you will find!

Quick Tip Tuesday – Set sail! :)

All Aboard!

There are countless activities in Walt Disney World!  Looking for a little fun outside of the parks?  Become a captain of your very own boat; set sail on Disney waterways and see things from a different perspective.  Whether you like to sail, canoe, or prefer something a little faster in pace, you can find it at select Walt Disney World Resort marinas.  Make sure to check with your resort, rules and regulations are always subject to change.

250 (2)

Wanting a little change of pace from the crowds at the park, this is a perfect solution.  It is like being in your own little “Disney World”.  What fun it is to cruise along the waterways seeing sites that are only possible by becoming a caption of your own boat.

Isabella’s Alice in One-Derland Party

January of 2012 I was faced with the same 1st Birthday dilemma as so many other Moms. What theme do  you do for your only little girls First Birthday party? Do you go with the classic #1 balloons and decor? Choose their “favorite character” before they even know where their nose is? So for my little girl, Isabella’s first birthday I did what every 30 year old wanna be crafty Mama would do, I took it to Pinterest.  My favorite of  all of the themes I founnd was Winter One-Derland. Now Isabella’s birthday is in January, so the winter part did apply. However, we live in Florida. We have no winter. Not a real one anyway. So in my search I started looking at different Disney themes, and came across this adorable silhouette of our dear Alice. *LIGHTBULB!* Alice in ONE DERLAND!

402373_10100722739555981_1167429150_n

I tend to be a less is more, keep it simple and classic kinda girl. So I chose 3 colors, and went from there, bright and colorful green, pink and blue. I worked with an Etsy seller, All Thats Pretty  to create the art work. There were several Alice themes that were similar, but I wanted to add our color palette and turn it into One-Derland as opposed to the traditional Wonderland. All Thats Pretty was good to work with. There was a huge and I mean HUGE issue with receiving the shipment of the decorations. I actually ended up receiving them the day before the party via Fed-Ex overnight. There was a point where I thought we were going to have no decor. This was more the US Postal Service and the sellers local post office’s issue than the sellers, but as a business owner their problems turn into your problems and Amy understood that and in the end they made it right and the decor was beautiful.

424598_10100722741217651_2078125390_n             424017_10100722743652771_1054864234_n  424247_10100722740064961_478249603_n

I made the tissue paper poms, and the Eat Me cookies. The cake is from our favorite Tampa bakery, Alessi Bakery.

We rented a Disney Princess bounce house to keep the kiddies busy (which I somehow took zero photo’s of). We’ve used  Games For Fun Party Rentals for several parties and they’ve always been awesome. Greatprices, very pleasant to do business with. We will no doubt use them again in the future.
