Deluxe vs. Moderate… who wins the race?

My very first time experiencing the “complete” magical package was in 1990.  I booked my first Walt Disney World resort, Caribbean Beach- I was hooked. There was something very different about lodging on property; not having to leave the magical confines of Disney’s “World” was incomparable.  I continued to visit Caribbean Beach Resort for ten years (partially for economical reasons but mostly out of familiarity and love for the resort), then a deluxe came my way. I had my sites set on Wilderness Lodge for many a year then one day in the mailbox I found a bulletin….. inside, a “pin” for 25% off Deluxe Resorts.  I had to make this happen and I did.  I booked a magical package and made Wilderness Lodge my” home away from home”.  I was so thrilled with the deluxe experience that the next year my family booked at Animal Kingdom Lodge, (Jambo House).  Our stay at Animal Kingdom was memorable but it left us longing for our first love, Caribbean Beach.  I began reflecting on my experiences and thinking about the differences between deluxe and moderate accommodations.  The following year I gained yet another new resort experience, this time Port Orleans Riverside which added to my knowledge of Deluxe vs. Moderate.

So let’s take a look at the differences and why each one can rein champion.

Moderate resorts have lots of space, their layout is vast.  If you don’t want to be in the middle of the action there is plenty of space to find a private spot.  I love the multiple quiet pools found at moderate resorts, the choice to be in the center of action or in a more intimate location is a great option.  Moderates have a more relaxed casual vibe and sometimes when vacationing that is a top priority… relaxed and casual.  Moving on to some less than stellar features… The dining options can be a bit hum-drum.  Depending on the moderate you choose, dining may consist of mainly burgers and fries.  This can become lackluster. Another possible unappealing attribute could be the open air motel feel.  During inclement weather taking a trip to the main lobby or food court will result in soggy circumstances.

 On to Deluxe…

Deluxe resorts are awe inspiring upon arrival.  Walking into their lobbies will bring upon a sharp inhale followed by a whistle of enthusiasm.  Their space is more compact keeping their guests closer in proximity to one another, making it more difficult at times to find a quiet nook.  Their dining options are vast, allowing you to choose from counter service to signature dining, making mealtime a lot more diverse.  During stormy weather the variety of indoor activity and rainy day exploration can lead to great fun and staying dry is a definite plus! If extra amenities are important to you, then a deluxe is where you will find such things as a spa,  gym and childcare is just a walk down the hallway.

In my opinion both are frontrunners, finding a resort that fits your needs and a theme that inspires your Disneyside is key.
