Another Magic Kingdom Mondays Montage ~ Magical Munchies

I’m back with another Magic Kingdom Montage ~ The Magic Kingdom is full of sights, sounds, and smells that draws us in and helps create that unique magical experience we can’t find anywhere else.  Today I am going to share three magical munchies …. Yummy!

Premium Mickey Ice Cream Bar!

montage2

I think I will start out with the most obvious magical dessert in the Magic Kingdom, not only for me but probably for many of you.  My goodness!  It has to be the set of ears atop this ice cream bar that makes it so darn tasty!  Creamy Vanilla ice cream with a velvety chocolate hard shell ~irresistible!  Would you agree?

The ever famous Dole Whip~

montage3

This is actually a new found Magical Yummy Munchie for me.  I heard about them year after year but I would never make my way back to Aloha Isle in Adventureland to try one at the end of the day.  Then just last August Nicole and I stood in a scorching hot, long line so we could finally claim bragging rights for trying a Dole Whip.  Let me tell you, no kidding, I think we just about melted before we made it to the counter to order (hence the melted faces in our picture)!  It did take us a moment to understand all the varieties and decide which was the best one for us, after all- if it had taken us this long to try one we had to get it right the first time!  We took those cups of gold to the side, had a seat and enjoyed every last bit.  We will be back and will stand in a line practically melting all over again just to enjoy another Dole Whip!

Caramel Apple Tart from Liberty Tree Tavern~

montage1

First I must tell you, sadly this dessert is no longer available and I have been mourning the loss for quite some time.  It was such a favorite of mine I had to include it in my top three Magical Kingdom Munchies.  This was a dessert offered on the lunch menu at the Liberty Tree Tavern; it was made of shortbread crust, sugared apples and cinnamon ice cream- a simple all American dessert that I will never forget!

My Magic Kingdom Mondays Montage

I’m back with another Magic Kingdom Montage ~ The Magic Kingdom is full of sights, sounds, and smells that draws us in and helps create that unique magical experience we can’t find anywhere else.  Today I am going to share three scents that I believe add magic to the Magic Kingdom experience.

  1. The Magic smell of popcorn as I enter Main Street USA~

The only other place I relate this scent to is at a movie theater.  When I smell popcorn at a movie theater it heightens my excitement for the show to begin.  Same thing at the Magic Kingdom!  I smell that popcorn as I step onto Main Street USA and I get excited for the show to start!

pop1

2. The scent of the water while riding the Pirates of the Caribbean~

I guess this may apply to any water filled attraction within the Magic Kingdom, but there is something specific about the Pirates of the Caribbean.  Whether it is just the dampness or the chemicals in the water or maybe even the smoke screen that adds to the over-all scent, I just love the smell while embarking on a“Yo Ho, Yo Ho It’s a Pirate’s Life for Me!” ride.

pop3

3. The strong order of gasoline while “speeding” down Tomorrowland Speedway!

Any other time I am inhaling such strong odors of gasoline you will not see  the huge smile on my face that I wear when “zooming” down Tomorrowland’s Speedway.  Add the sound of the cars in with the smell of gasoline, boy oh boy it’s a Magic Kingdom winner for me!

Magic Kingdom Mondays Montage of Magic

Though I love every park within Walt Disney World Resort, there is something special about the Magic Kingdom ~ It exudes a special magical quality that just can’t be found anywhere else.  If you have visited the Magic Kingdom, you know exactly what I am talking about.  In this Magic Kingdom Monday Montage I am going to share three things I find magical about the Magic Kingdom then I would like you to do the same.  Post your three magical thoughts, experiences, or moments in the comments section so we can spread more magic amongst us all!

The Magic Kingdom Opening Ceremony is a most important magical experience for me!

Magic Kingdom Montage

To stand outside the gates in front of the Train Station and watch Mickey and friends ride in on the Walt Disney World Railroad to greet everyone is an overwhelming feeling of magic and excitement!  It starts the day with the utmost Magical experience.

Approaching the Partners Statue as Cinderella Castle becomes larger than life.

partners

Usually the first thing you notice stepping onto Main Street USA is the awe inspiring beauty of Cinderella Castle.  It beckons you to come down the street to greet her.  In doing so you are introduced to Walt and Mickey standing proud right in front of the castle.  I like to take a moment to say hello to the man I so admire and his pal I so adore.  Seeing this statue evokes a pure magical moment for me.

 Entering Adventureland!

Crossing the bridge into Adventurland and hearing the tiki music play, makes me feel as if I could float down the street with total anticipation of what adventures lay ahead!  Pirates! Cruises through foreign lands! Tropical serenading Tiki Birds! Now that’s Magical!

Two Moms get Keys to the Kingdom

August 31st of last year I made my first trek to Walt Disney World Resort without my family in tow.  I was on my way to meet my new DBFF (Disney Best Friend Forever) and future Two Moms and A Mouse co-conspirator.  This trip was extra special because we had booked a Keys to the Kingdom Tour.

We had both been gitty with anticipation for months, and then before we knew it, there we were sitting at the Port Orleans bus depot waiting for the Magic Kingdom bus to pick us up.

Bus Stop Selfie

We arrived at the Magic Kingdom @ 7:30am and waited in line with other guests who had prior reservations for breakfast and tours.  Finally at 8am we were able to enter onto Main Street USA.  We took the opportunity to take pictures  that otherwise may have been difficult to capture with crowds.

DSC02237

key to the kingdom

We were privileged to take a ride in a Main Street Vehicle – which brought us down to Cinderella Castle- this was my very first ride ever in one of these vehicles!  Being mindful of our 8:15am check in time for the tour, we made our way back to Guest Services to be accounted for.  When we arrived we were greeted by two Cast Members who gave us a menu from the Columbia Harbour House to pre-order our lunch for later that afternoon.  We then received a small folded card with our name on the front, across the top it read, “Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom” – inside was a small gold key which had the same phrase engraved along the length, the head of the key was of course shaped as a Mickey Head with an imprint of Cinderella Castle.

We were also given an audio pack and headset with a 3×2 rectangular pin attached, with the same phrase as well as our name.  This audio pack and headset were to ensure we could hear our tour guide at all times while filtering out the background noise of the hustle and bustle around the Magic Kingdom. I believe it also translates for any one speaking a language other than English.  Our 8:30 tour was about to commence, we were told under no circumstances were we allowed to take pictures during the tour and were asked to put away our cameras and phones. We were off for our 5 hour tour!

key to the kingdom2

Our first few stopping points were along Main Street USA as our tour guide talked about how Disney likes to present its park in the aspects of a “show”, with the smells, sounds and sights.  Then our tour guide brought us down a side street to the right, the park was about to open and he did not want us to get trampled by the onslaught of guests rushing to their favorite attractions.  Once the coast was clear we moved on toward Adventurland where we scored a ride on Pirates of the Caribbean without having to wait in the que- the advantages of being a VIP!  I believe we were scheduled to jump aboard a Jungle Cruise boat instead, but it was being refurbishment at the time.  After our POC VIP ride we sat in the outside seating area of Tortuga Tavern, across from Pirates of the Caribbean; here our tour guide spoke about Walt’s past history.  After a quick bathroom break we made our way “back stage” through Frontierland. He had us observe how the sounds of Magic  Kingdom would fade away after a certain point “back stage”.

Key to the kingdom5

We proceeded on, viewing their large avac system –a system of underground pipes that removes the trash from the front of the “show” to the back of the “show”.  We moved onto the storeroom where the Electrical Parade floats were housed as well as some of the Holiday floats, there was a separate storage area for additional Disney vehicles.  These huge metal warehouses had such cool vintage signs that hung on the walls; I was just itching to take pictures of them!  While back stage we witnessed some Cast Members along with a pirate float practicing for an upcoming parade- this was not a float from the current 3pm parade, thinking back – I believe this was part of the new Festival of Fantasy Parade – but who knows, I could be wrong.

Next up was a walk through Liberty Square and onto our Columbia Harbour House Lunch.  We were escorted upstairs where the tables had been preset with our names and lunches.  Nicole and I were dining with a couple from England.  They were very friendly as we engaged in conversation about their many cats and dreary England days.

ktk 6

It was time to move on.  We gathered into the “Counting House” outside the entrance of the Haunted Mansion, to talk about some facts and trivia about this spooky building which houses 999 Happy Haunts. We then made our way toward the exit where we actually entered the Haunted Mansion.  We went down a dark narrow hall and through a side door which brought us into the stretching room, benefits once again of being a VIP.  Once everyone had made it through, (note: no one decided to take up residence within the mansion just yet), we made our way back toward Main Street USA.

It was time for the part of the tour that we Two Moms had been waiting for most of all!  We were entering the utilidors!  Oh, how I had dreamed of this day!  What would we see?  Would Mickey be there, Cinderella?  Would we see the Seven Dwarfs engaging in a game of cards right there on the hall way floor??  Maybe we would see the wardrobe room or maybe where the princesses became princesses!

kttk3

We walked down – – – down a stair well and entered through another door; we were now below the Magic Kingdom.

kttk2

This has come to be common knowledge for most people, but I’ll put it out there again.  The utilidors is actually the ground level or first floor of the Magic Kingdom.  Because of Florida’s high water table they were not able to dig tunnels; instead they built a second level and created the Magic Kingdom on the second floor.  So now we have entered into the “secret” utilidors, sadly we didn’t see anything on my wish list.  Here are some of the things we did see and learn:

  • The color striping in each hall way corresponds with each of the Magic Kingdom lands above so a cast member does not ruin “the show” by entering the wrong land with the wrong costume on.  Since some people are color blind, the names of the different lands and pictures relating to each land also appear on the walls.

  •  We viewed many historical photos placed on a wall while our guide gave us information about them and told their stories.
  •  We witnessed a few battery operated vehicles transporting items or people through the tunnels, these little vehicles move fast!  Just before they came to a turn they would beep their horn alerting any oncoming traffic.
  •  As we were leaving we saw a few Casey’s Corner Cast Members and carts of large hot dog rolls.

We exited the utilidors and took the stairs up – up — up and returned back onto Main Street USA.

kttk4

Our tour was about to end, we stood under the train station on Main Street and returned our audio packs and head phones.  Our tour guide asked us to gather around and proceeded to share a personal “Magical Story” with us.  He began to talk about his mother who at one time was very ill with cancer.  Her doctor had suggested she go and do the things that made her feel happy and at peace and to listen to music that made her feel in high spirits.  She planned a vacation to her “happy place”, the Magic Kingdom and made plans to watch “Wishes”, this was a “feel good” memory for her.  Our guide told us, Disney had allowed him to enjoy the show with his mother, and he continued his story telling us how she belted the whole song out as the fireworks went off one by one.  He began to get visibly emotional and proceeded to tell us his mother was doing much better.  By this time it was hard holding back emotions as tears streamed down my face – I don’t remember if she was completely healed or if her cancer had just stopped spreading- but I do remember this was his Magical Disney Story because he felt Disney’s atmosphere and music truly had a healing effect on his mother.

A very profound moment at the end of our tour.

Now, I am sure you are wondering what we thought of our Keys to the Kingdom Tour and if we would recommend it?

First, the success of each tour depends on the enthusiasm and insightfulness of the tour guide you are with, so each tour will slightly vary.  That being said, Nicole and I were pleased with the tour and would recommend any Disney enthusiast to embark on their own KTTKT.  Some people have taken this tour more than once; as for Nicole and I, once was enough and we are looking forward to other WDW tours.

Have you taken the Keys to the Kingdom Tour?  Tell us your favorite part or something you were wishing to see while on your tour.

Princess Couture

I absolutely love browsing the Magic Kingdom shops, each “land” has their own themed merchandise.  On one occasion I was drawn into a Fantasyland shop purely by its name, Castle Couture.  Maybe I would find that perfect tiara I have been searching for to go with that amazing ball gown I purchased last week.

Castle22

Ok- back to reality.  What an adorable name for an adorable princess shop.  Of course you can find anything on your “must have princess list”, but what really caught my eye was this magically glowing gown.

DSCF0351

As I approached the gown I knew right away it belonged to Princess Aurora.  It was glowing hues of blue then pink.

castle4

I was awe struck, it was gorgeous – what I wouldn’t do to try it on, but this dress was clearly meant for only one particular princess.

On a separate occasion I found one of Cinderella’s original gowns, the one made for her by her wonderful little mice friends.  If I was charmed by these gowns, little princesses in training must be over the moon about them!

castle3

I realized this shop did not carry my size, how incredibly disappointing. BUT I found out through recent research I can certainly receive a little Disney Magic from a sprinkling of Fairy Dust given out by a Castle Couture Cast Member.  You can be sure I will be visiting again, how could anyone resist a chance to be sprinkled with Fairy Dust?

How Imagineers Advertised Attractions

When entering the tunnels of the Magic Kingdom Park my eyes always scan the attraction posters that are displayed along the train station walls.  Of course I already know what I am in store for – the attractions are as familiar to me as going home to visit my parents in the house I grew up in.  What the posters do is spark my excitement with their bright colors and quick reminder of what is to come as I venture into the park.

Poster ThunderMountainPoster Teas Cups

Disney has been using attraction posters since Disneyland first opened in 1955.  Walt’s version of an amusement park was far different than anything anyone had ever encountered; the Imagineers needed a way to depict the attractions that awaited them inside the gates.  These beautiful and vibrant posters aligned the main entrance gates as if it were a theater lobby, some showing what lie ahead and some depicting up-coming attractions for the near future.

Poster PeterPanPoster Its a small world

When Walt Disney World finally opened their gates and began their “show”,  many of these audiences were not familiar with this new “amusement park” experience.  Disneyland posters were re- purposed and became very helpful in the opening of Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

Some attraction posters can still be found in the Magic Kingdom, mostly within the train station tunnel.  But they are a piece of our American history and tell a great story.  If you are interested in learning more about their history and how they were and still are used through out all Disney parks, check out this link.  Poster Art of the Disney Parks

The Many Mountains of Walt Disney World Resort

I thought it would be fun to compare all the thrill seeking mountains in Walt Disney World.  Which has the fastest speeds, highest incline drop, longest ride experience, tallest height restriction???

Let go check them out!

all the mountains

Let’s start out with my personal favorite-

A pitch black rocket ride……..

Space Mountain opened January 15, 1975 and is the oldest operating roller coaster in the state of Florida.  You must be 44 inches tall to experience this high speed thrill.

spce

Step on board this rocket for a high velocity trip into space!  You will zoom by comets and reach for the stars at the speed of 27 mph for 2.35 minutes.  This track will descend 26ft, hurling you down through the dark spirals of space.

spc2

Time to trade that rocket in for a train car…….

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad shared their cursed town and possessed train on November 15th, 1980.  You must be 40 inches tall to ride this crazy train.

btmr

All a- board for a 3 minute tour of a town wiped out by a flash flood!  Go speeding at 35 mph through an old abandoned mine town on this possessed train that has no engineer and no crew aboard!  The highest rock mountain you will tumble down is 50 feet tall.

btmr2

From the Southwest to the Deep South……..

Splash Mountain plunged onto the scene in October of 1992.  You must be 40 inches tall to float along these rivers.

spla

Hop into this log and follow Br’er Rabbit on a 10 minute journey – turned crazy adventure, to find his laughing place.  Out wit Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear as you drop 53 feet at 40 mph.  Return home happy, safe, and waterlogged with Br’er Rabbit.

spl2

Ready for another train ride?  How about in the Himalayas?

Expedition Everest became Walt Disney Worlds tallest mountain and most expensive coaster on April 7, 2006.  You must be 44 inches tall to join this trek to find the Yeti.

exp2

Your train departs from the station which is located in the village of Serka Zong.  For about 3 minutes you take speeds of 50 mph through the Himalayas.  You get a glimpse of the Yeti’s shadow and suddenly hurl out the side of an 80 foot mountain.  Just as you feel this may not have been a good decision, you pull back into the station, a little rattled  but with not a scratch.

These are the Mountains of Walt Disney World?  Have you conquered them all?

Tell us which is your favorite or which you don’t dare to board!

Tomorrowland’s own Public Transportation System

When my family and I travel to Walt Disney World we always seem to arrive on a Monday- and what is the first thing we do? Go to the Magic Kingdom!  Of course we have to start our day out with a dose of Disney Magic and the best place to find this is definitely the Magic Kingdom!  For this reason I am dubbing-  Monday’s @ Two Moms and A Mouse, ‘Magic Kingdom Monday’s’

Today we are heading over to Tomorrowland to take a ride on Tomorrowland Transit Authority Peoplemover or better known as the TTA.  Before I tell you why I chose to visit this classic Disney attraction, let’s first talk about the history of the TTA.

tta3

The WEDway People Mover was the original name of the TTA Peoplemover; WED stood for Walter Elias Disney.  Disneyland rolled this attraction out on July 2nd, 1967, but it was a little different than Walt Disney World’s TTA.  Disneyland’s Wedway Peoplemover had an open track with covered cars.  The cars weren’t motorized, the track itself was. Rubber tires powered by electricity were placed every nine feet along the three quarter of a mile track which helped move the PeopleMover along.

tta1

tta2

Walt Disney World received their version on July 1st of 1975; their attraction uses linear synchronous motorsit as a power system, (to read more about this click here).  WDW’s TTA has gone through several refurbishments since then but remains a well loved and visited attraction.  Now that the history lesson is over, let’s take a ride!

tta6

“Welcome to Tomorrowland Transit Authority Peoplemover, your quiet and carefree highway in the sky.  Sit back and relax and enjoy your grand circle tour of Tomorrowland.”  Even though this isn’t the fastest moving attraction or one that uses the latest technology to entertain us, it is a classic that has stood the test of time at Walt Disney World.  You step into an open-air car via a moving conveyer belt that moves the same speed as the car and off we go!

tta4

This is the “perfect vehicle for people watching” and a great way to get a unique view and guided tour of Tomorrowland while we rest our feet.  At one time the PeopleMover was being considered as a viable replacement for public transportation, I for one would love a Peoplemover in my town along with a monorail!

tta5

As a “Metroliner” we will get to venture through Space Mountain, so if you have not been brave enough to take a trip through space in a rocket, now is your chance to do so in a less intimidating way.  Keep a look out for Walt’s model of Progress City (his inspiration for Epcot), what a thrill to see something Walt himself designed!

tta9

tta8

The Peoplemover is one of my favorite attractions in the Magic Kingdom.  I love to feel as if I am one of Tomorrowland’s very own citizens using my futuristic town’s provided transportation to get to and from my destinations.  I never tire of the recorded audio tour and all the little twists and turns that give just a touch of thrill within this relaxing ride through this Land of Tomorrow.

If you have not ventured aboard this cities public transportation system, I encourage you to seek it out on your next visit.  If you have had the pleasure of riding the TTA, tell us your favorite things about it!

Want to take a ride now, hop aboard here  and go to our WDW video’s section and look for TTA Peoplemover 🙂
