A Classic Fairytale with a Modern Twist ~ Cinderella and her Running Shoes

Copy-of-MB-Red-Logo

Welcome to those of you joining me from Frontierland Station and those of you just hopping aboard. I am the  Final stop on our Magical Blogorail.”

This is a story of a classic fairytale with a modern twist ~

She slid on her finest pair of running shoes, the new 2014 New Balance Cinderella sneakers.  Though she bought them nearly six months ago they were in mint condition, no princess would ever be caught with disheveled shoes!  She was on her way to Central Park for her longest run yet – 8 miles. She had a whole 7 months to work up to 13.1 miles for the Glass Slipper Challenge; it wasn’t going to be easy but she was more than determined.

ella2

It was a rather brisk morning, the chill in the air and the bright orange hues across the tree tops suggested fall was settling in.  It wouldn’t be long before a blanket of white would cover the city; she shook the chilly thought out of her head and set off to achieve her new goal.

ella3

She loved to run, it was the only time she felt free, free from the constraints of her tiny apartment.  It was as if she could conquer the world when she was running. She picked up her pace, feeling extra ambitious this particular morning. Something felt different, good different; she lifted her head higher as the chilly air pinched her cheeks.  Her thoughts wandered through her past relationships.  She thought to herself, when would she find her “Prince Charming”?

The next thing she knew she was on the ground.  Some how she had tripped, What just happened?, she thought.  “My shoe! Where is my shoe?!” she said frantically.

“Excuse me, does this belong to you?” She looked up where she saw her Cinderella sneaker held gently within a pair of masculine hands.  As she slowly raised her eyes her jaw dropped open. She had never seen this beautiful creature in the park before.

ella5

“Are you ok?” he asked.  “Let me help you up.  My name is Alto, well Al- you can call me Al,”  he said as he helped her to her feet.  “Lean on my shoulder,” he  slipped her royal sneaker back onto her foot.

She had yet to speak a word.  She thought, where is my voice?  She took a deep breath, “ Thank you. My name is Ella, you can call me…… Ella,”  she said with a smirk hoping he had a sense of humor.

They began walking together; she forgot all about her 8 mile run.  As time seemed to stand still she glanced down at her armband that was still velcro’d securely around her upper arm.

“OH NO!  I have to run, I’m late! I’m so sorry.  It was so nice to meet you, thank you for your help!” she called back as she sprinted down the park’s walkway.

For a moment Alto stood still in disbelief, he couldn’t believe she was gone. He continued along the walkway that they had just indulged in deep conversation, his thoughts completely focused on her. There is something different about Ella, he thought.  He just couldn’t get her out of his mind.  As he shuffled his feet along the walkway he came across a blue satin ribbon.

ella6

“That’s the ribbon from Ella’s sneaker,” he said out loud to himself.  He began to feel an excitement in which he didn’t quite understand and without another clear thought he began to run.  He assumed he was running to find Ella, but how was that possible when she had left him over fifteen minutes ago?  He didn’t care, he continued to run without reason.  As he rounded the corner, there coming toward him in the same fashion was Ella.  Relief washed across him as if he had just found a long lost heirloom.  She ran straight to him smiling so brightly that it made him feel as if her smile was meant solely for him.

“I found your ribbon after you ran off,”  he said as he once again knelt down to assist her with her royal sneaker.

“Al?” she said as if she had something very important to ask him.

He gazed up at her longing for her to speak her next words just so he could hear her voice again.

“I am on my way to a ball room dance class, would you care to join me?”

He slowly rose from his kneeling position, though his heart felt as if it were beating faster and harder than a horse galloping through a field.  “I would be honored to accompany you to your dance class Ella.” How he loved the way her name sounded as it rolled off his tongue.  He put his crooked arm out and she intertwined her arm with his.  Off they went arm and arm with boundless possibilities surrounding them.  Both knew there was something different about the other, a good different.

As their dance lesson came to an end, neither was ready to say goodbye.  They found themselves sitting in a diner a block down the street.  Both Alto and Ella talked how this was their favorite place to eat and each one claimed to frequent the restaurant, yet neither had ever seen the other there.  The evening progressed from dinner to dessert and still neither was ready for it to end.

ella7

As they walked out into the starry night, this time hand in hand, a horse and carriage stopped in front of them.  Alto turned his head toward Ella and once again she smiled at him with that incredibly bright smile that he now knew was made just for him.

“Your carriage awaits my lady”, he said as he gestured his hand toward the open aired entry.  She stepped into her future with Alto right behind her.  As the horse and carriage journeyed down the street, off in the distance the faint sound of church bells could be heard ringing.

When registration opens for a runDisney event there is an influx of blog posts about each runner’s excitement and personal goals and individual stories.  Why is this? – Let me digress for just a moment.

run post7run post 6

I too have jumped into the corral – team – sorority  of runDisney runners; why?  My “at the moment” answer is simply, “I LOVE DISNEY”, and want to be a part of this awesome event.  To add to this, I get to convert my run wear into a princess outfit!  I am so excited about this!

run post9

I do like to exercise and I actually use to run as a 20 something year old, but those days are long behind me.  I felt inspired about running again when my DBFF (Disney Best Friend Forever) came to my neck of the woods, (NY) for a visit.

runpost10

She invited me to run with her; I was a little nervous that I would hold her back.  As we set out on our jogging journey, Nicole informed me of a program she was using to train by Jeff Galloway.  I won’t go into detail because at this time I am not knowledgeable enough to speak on it, but here is the website, runDisney Training .  What I can say is it incorporates a walk/run schedule in different intervals depending on your skill level (and as you progress) that allows anyone to obtain and succeed their fitness goal(s).  In fact this is actually a healthier way for your body to integrate running into a fitness routine.  Because of this program I was able to keep pace with Nicole though I haven’t run in ages.

Why did I choose to register for the Princess Half Marathon Weekend 2015?

runpost5

I have been somewhat aware of these marathon events over the years and thought, “How cool!  I would love to do this.”  Last year Nicole registered for the first time and I was sooo excited for her, (a little jealous) but mostly tickled princess pink with excitement!  She set personal goals and stuck to them; she was determined to accomplish her goals and she did, and it was very inspiring to watch.

runpost

It was then that I knew I wanted more than ever to be apart of this inspirational event, and of course with my Disney sister Nicole.  Registration for the Princess Marathon Weekend 2015 has opened and I am now a contender in this event presented by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals!  I have registered for the Disney Princess 5K and Disney Enchanted 10K and I intend to implement Jeff Galloway’s program to prepare for these royal inspired events.

Nicole is raising the stakes this year and has added to her run agenda, The Disney Princess Half Marathon and the Glass Slipper Challenge.

runpost11

Now, back to the question at the beginning of this article, why are there so many blog posts about runDisney?  I decided to search around a bit and read the articles written by these runDisney fans.  This is what I gathered.  When something inspires you so much it gets into your core being and you want to share it with the world, these events are a passion for so many people.  Some are novice runners where others are accomplished marathon champions, but I believe it all comes down to a common purpose that connects these Disney runners. Though each individual has their own personal reasons or set goals, they are all running for a cause– to get stronger, to fight for a cure, to support a friend, to accomplish a goal, to bond with a loved one- there are an abundance of wonderful stories out there.

run post 9

It isn’t about who runs the fastest; it’s about supporting and cheering on your fellow runDisney family members.  It’s about celebrating everyone’s individual accomplishments and let’s not forget the added bonus that makes it all over the top, Mickey’s Magical Touch.

runpost13

I am so excited and honored to begin my runDisney journey, to set my own goals and celebrate my own accomplishments as well as the accomplishments of all the other amazing runDisney champions!

Registering for the Tower of Terror 10 miler! EEEKS! (and other me and runDisney news)

Screen Shot 2014-02-26 at 6.22.34 PM

The tower of terror 10 miler has been open for registration for a mere few weeks and its already 61% full. Sighh….so I’m going to register asap. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly scared of this spooky 10 miler. The furthest I’ve run (as of Sunday) is 5 miles. No small potatos sure, but far from 10 miles. I’m hoping one of my runner friends steps up to the plate to run it with me :/ So much easier with a good partner in crime by your side. If none are brave enough I’ll have to recruit my #1 PIC, my hubby 😉 Lets check out that all important bling….

603608_532448286781138_1855357688_n  O yeeeaaaaa….for those that don’t know, the medals are a HUGE motivation for me.

The next race on my docket is the  Expedition Everest 5k which is an obstacle course/scavenger hunt on the evening of May 3rd. I’ll be running that with one of my nearest and dearest friends. We’re booked at Caribbean Beach would should be interesting. Its one resort I’ve never visited and it gets very mixed reviews. My TMAM counterpart loves it there, so I have high hopes. I know I’m ready for the race, just need to get my time down. My running partner is much faster than I, so currently running every other day 3.1, and right now I’m up to a run 2 mins/walk 30 second interval and my best pace has been 11: 39 seconds. We’d like to finish under 35 mins, my goal is closer to 30, but I’m realistic 🙂 Lets take a peak at THAT bling…

expedition-everest-events-media-1200x430-03 They open up and have a real compass on the inside.

In other runDisney news – a new half-marathon was announced this week! Unfortunately its at Disneyland. Avengers Super Hero Half-Marathon weekend will take place Nov. 14 – 16th at Disneyland and will include a 5k, kids run, and is eligible for the Coast-to-Coast challenge (completely 1 Disneyland and 1 Disney World half marathon in the same calendar year – yes its on my bucket list).  The Wine and Dine half is open for registration today for Disney Visa cardholders, and pass holders. I plan to run the jingle jungle 5k that weekend. I wish there was a 10k that I could do for time, but there’s not. I’ve heard the Wine and Dine half is a lot of fun, but my plan is for Princess 2015 half is going to be my first half marathon – and I’m sticking to that plan.

Sending lots of pixie dust to all the runners out there 🙂 Be sure to comment if you have any of these races in your future!

Royal Family 5k 2014 Wrap-Up

To say that my experience at Disney’s Princess Half-Marathon weekend was an awesome experience would be an understatement. Although it sounds dramatic, I’d actually venture to say life changing, but we’ll get to that later. Granted I’ve only been a spectator at other race events, and all local here in the Tampa Bay area, but the seemless process, attention to detail, and excitement left me wishing I’d signed up for all the other weekend’s races!! Here’s my recap and review:

We arrived to Disney around 8am on Thursday morning and went straight to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports with sneakers on the brain. Both my partner in crime Jen and I were determined to get the 2014 New Balance runDisney sneakers. Although New Balance had an online que process set up where registered runners could sign in at 6a on Expo day and receive an arrival time to return to try on/purchase shoes, the system did not work for us. We recieved a message that said our registration was not found. While in line at the New Balance sign up at EWWOS, many other race registrants experienced the same thing. A NB representative told us that the que set up for 800 registrants filled in about 3 minutes and that was why we recieved the error. I’m not sure I believe that as I tried 3x before 8:01 am. It all worked out for the best, as we also found out that people that did receive appointment times online recieved times that were much later in the day, some 5-6p. Jen and I checked in and signed up around 845am (opened at 8am ), and recieved a Group 2 10a return time.

While we were waiting for our 10a appointment, we headed to Disney’s All-Star Sport resort to check in for out one night stay. I’ve had the pleasure of staying here many times in the past and it never really disappoints. It’s everything that you expect in a value, and the theming is very sportatstic. It’s not my favorite value (Music or Pop are my faves), but I also like that it’s the first stop on the bus route when returning “home”. Our check in was easy peezy, we arrived to no line, and a clean and ready room. We dropped our bags at room 2250 in building 2 (standard room), and took the Disney provided bus transportation back to EWWOS.

Upon arriving back we made our way down the red carpet (details details) and followed the signs to New Balance Return. We arrived about 5 minutes after 10am, and only had 3 others ahead of us. Once it was our turn the New Balance Rep looked us up on her iPad and magically a 2nd NB rep greeted us happily and invited us to follow him. He lead us into the Expo close to the New Balance area where we sat down while he scurried behind a curtain to get our sizes. Both Jennie and I are ABSOLUTELY thrilled with our Cinderella size 9.5s. We were very excited to wear them for the rest of the day and got a lot of attention from curious park goers.

After we made a quick walk around the expo we went to pick up our race packets. The packet included our personalized bibs, the large run disney clear sling plastic bag, a race program, and the information needed to pick up our official race tee shirt. The rest of the day we spent enjoying the day at Epcot and Magic Kingdom. Jen went on Test Track for the first time, which she loved, and we had a delish lunch in Mexico. You can find our pre race festivities covered here. I will say that next year, I will not be spending the days in the parks given all the walking that it entails. We were very tired even though we went back home around 8p, and regretted the decision at 4a the next morning. Next year I will be participating in all 3 races (with the grace of god and a lot of pixie dust), and plan on days at the pool, and other less strenuous activities.

Race day wake up call was 4am, as the plan was to board the bus at 5am which we did with no trouble. Neither of us carried much to he race. There is a gEAR check, but with our magic bands there really was nothing we needed. I made sure I had a small breakfast, half of a bagel and a banana. We brought bottles of water with us to stay hydrated until race time. We boarded the bus, which was full, around 5a. We were in the final corral – they assign those based on the pace you indicate you expect finishing with when you register, slower runners in back, faster up front. Corral A started promptly at 6:15am, and each successive corral started 8 minutes later. With 4 corrals ahead of us (total of 10,000 runners) ours started at 6:50a.

A very good portion of the race is spent outside of Epcot. Our goal was not to finish the race in any particular time or pace. It is a fun run, and we intended to make it just that. My partner did suffer from some shin splints early in the race, so I went a bit ahead and stopped for a few characters which gave her some time to catch up. My first was Dopey, which went very fast, but the next was Beast who I would’ve loved a photo with but he line was probably 100 runners deep and went impossibly slow. Before Dopey was the bug Princess from Bugs Life, and Mulan and Mushu were also outside of Japan. The course is narrow in spots, which can be frustrating with the amount of walkers there are. Watching the sun come up over World Showcase was breathtaking and inspiring. This being my first race I certainly understand now the drive that takes you over when your running with others, and aspiring to do your best. I made it to the finish before my partner, so I stopped just short and backtracked to the Ball where I met her and we went through the finish line together 🙂 We received our medals – which we wore for the rest of the day of course, and our post race snacks. The snack box included Pop Chips, Craisins, a Luna Bar (my fave), a shortbread cookie, and the banana. Disney also provided bottled water and Powerade.

image image

After the the race we hung out a bit before taking the bus back to All Start Sport. We were a little disappointed to miss out on the post race character pics. We’d sat down to eat our snacks and relax, not realizing that Princess Minnie and Belle were taking photos in another location. Once we made our way there the lines were closed 🙁 After a shower and a well deserved mimosa, we headed out for a celebratory breakfast and 2nd trip to the expo. My gps got us completely turned around and we pulled into the first resort we came up on, for fear that we would miss the breakfast turn around. We ended up at the Artist Palette inside Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa, which was lovely. Jen had also never visited before so it worked out for the best. We both went for the gold so to speak with the breakfast bounty – can you believe she’s never had a Mickey Waffle!!!!??? Breakfast was prompt and delicious, just what we needed to recharge our batteries.

The last stop for the trip was back to the Disney Princess Half-Marathon Weekend Expo. I loved the expo. It is VERY dangerous on the pocketbook. I made it out the first time with only my Spi Belt purchase. Second time around was a different story. I got 2 tanks from Runner Girl, as well as a car magnet, and a runDisney sling backpack. the Marjorie’s of the runDisney Merch was 1/2 marathon, Glass Slipper Challenge or 10k related. There were a few general shirts that I loved, but in the end decided against. When I run the other races I will load up on Merch – because darn it I will have earned it!! There were many, many apparel vendors, a few of my faves included Runner Girl, Raw Threads, and Sparkle Skirts. Winner of the most inspiring apparel goes to Run Girl Run. I took a few photos of some tees that darn near brought me to tears (in my post race euphoric state). They’re in the photo collage below. We stopped at a bunch of the booths and as I said, I could have lost the farm on things like head phones, KT tape, apparel apparel and more apparel, but in the end I restrained myself and my husband is happy I did 😉

This 2 day experience has done so much for me motivation wise that I’m going to need another post to put it into words, but I will say in short that it has made me so so so happy that I’ve begun this journey, and in a tradition of Magic and 100% first class experience as only Disney can. I said I would run at least one race each Disney race weekend and now I want to run EVERY RACE at every race weekend!! I was left a little bit jealous of all of the 10k, Half, and Glass Slipper participants. I wanted to be them. But my time will come. I truly feel that I’ve found a part of myself that I always hoped existed. I can’t call myself a runner just yet, I have too much appreciation and respect for those that truly deserve the title. But I’m getting there. And I’m going to do it at home, at Disney. ~ N

My runDisney Journey

Run-Disney-Logo

12 days and counting until I run my first 5k! Which one you ask? Where?  Well Walt Disney World of course! Some of you that follow us on Facebook may know that I made a very ambitious New Years resolution. I will run the Royal Family 5k at Epcot on 2/21/2014, and then run in at least one race on each of the WDW race weekends, ending with the Princess Half Marathon 2/2015. Here’s the course from last years 5k, theres not much change this year:

2013RoyalFamily5KMap1

My schedule for the year is starting to shape, with new race dates being released slowly but surely. I’m registered for the Expedition Everest Challenge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on May 3rd, and next on the docket is the Tower of Terror 10 miler in October. I’m using the Jeff Galloway training program, and I’m in complete awe of what we can train our bodies to do. I’ve gone from barely being able to run a mile, to stretching my weekly long runs to 4.25 miles (12:12 mile pace, #tootsownhorn). I am a self proclaimed running hater. I’ve avoided it like the plague since middle school (many, many, many years ago). However I’ve officially been bitten by the running bug and really growing to love it.

So much that I’ve actually revised my goal recently. Not only will I run the Princess Half Marathon, but I will do the Glass Slipper Challenge!! The Glass Sipper Challenge includes 3 races included in the Disney Princess Half Marathon weekend, a 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon. I know that I can do it with the right training, so I figured why just do the half?? If I’m gonna do it….I’M GONNA REALLY DO IT!!

new medals

So I raise my glass of cab tonight to unbroken resolutions, and Walt Disney. Because as he has so aptly taught me, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” ~ Walt Disney
